Common Causes
If a 2FA code is not working, start with the token. Check that it was copied fully and contains no spaces, line breaks, quotes, or wrong characters.
The second common cause is time. TOTP is tied to a short interval. If the code has already refreshed, the target service may reject the old value.
Step-by-Step Check
- Paste the Base32 token without spaces or quotes.
- Wait for a fresh code and use it immediately.
- Check automatic time synchronization.
- Confirm that the token belongs to the same account and service.
When to Reconfigure 2FA
If the error repeats, the secret may be wrong or replaced. Re-enable two-factor authentication on the target service and store new recovery codes.
Diagnosing 2FA Code Errors
If a 2FA code is not working, the cause is usually the token, timing, copy/paste, or account mismatch. Wait for a fresh code, verify automatic time sync, check the Base32 secret, and try recovery codes before changing 2FA settings.
If the secret is lost and recovery codes are unavailable, only the target service can restore access.
